Learn how industry and government can partner to achieve sustainable construction and achieve positive climate action for the community, as demonstrated in DPR’s “living laboratories” - where they implement and test wellness and sustainability technologies and ideas that carry over into client projects. Marshall Andrews, project manager, DPR Construction; Ryan Poole, global sustainability leader, DPR Construction; and Stet SanbornAIA, principal, SmithGroup, discuss how working with local governments can lead to positive outcomes that address climate change, as demonstrated in DPR Construction’s Sacramento office. The program is moderated by architect Susan Piedmont-Palladino, director of Virginia Tech’s Washington Alexandria Architecture Center.

Climate ABC (Action/Building/Community) focuses on three essential aspects to addressing climate change: Actions by individuals, businesses, non-profits, policy makers, and civic entities; Building -- examples of both physical structures and landscapes, as well as coalitions of stakeholders; and Communities at every scale that are working to slow climate change.

This program will be presented live via Zoom. Once you complete your ticket purchase, you'll receive a confirmation email containing the link to attend the webinar.

The National Facilities Management and Technology Conference & Exposition (NFMT) was launched in 2001 by the publishers of Building Operating Management and Facility Maintenance Decisions magazines. Our goal was to bring education, networking, and product discovery to facilities professionals nationwide. Years later, NFMT continues the tradition in 2022 by offering broad-based education for facilities professionals from every type of organization: government, education, commercial office healthcare, retail, hospitality, and industrial.

Coupled shear wall systems are recognized as distinct from isolated shear wall systems in Canadian and New Zealand codes; they are also accorded higher response modification factors in view of their superior seismic performance. ASCE 7 has so far made no such distinction.

A ductile coupled wall system of reinforced concrete has now been defined in ACI 318-19. Issue Team (IT) 4 of the Provisions Update Committee (PUC) of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) developed a successful proposal to add four line items to ASCE Table 12.2-1, Design Coefficients and Factors for Seismic Force-Resisting Systems, featuring the ductile coupled wall system of reinforced concrete. The line items are under: A. Bearing Wall Systems, B. Building Frame Systems, and D. Dual Systems with Special Moment Frames. Based on a FEMA P-695 study, R = 8, Cd = 8, and Ωo = 2.5 have been proposed in all the line items. The height limits are the same as for corresponding uncoupled isolated wall systems. Seven different changes made in ACI 318-19 for the design and detailing of special structural walls were implemented in the design of prototypes for the FEMA P-695 study.

The above changes appear in the 2020 Edition of NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions for Buildings and Other Structures. The changes have now also been approved for inclusion in the upcoming 2022 edition of ASCE 7, which will be adopted by the 2024 International Building Code.

The proposed presentation will outline the above development, will include relevant details of the specific changes to ASCE 7, and importantly, will feature a design example.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the basics of ductile coupled wall systems of concrete
  • Be familiar with the ACI 318 definition of this system and understand its nuances
  • Understand the ASCE 7-22 provisions concerning this system
  • Learn how to apply this system through a design example

The Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI), in partnership with the University of Texas at Arlington, is pleased to announce the 4th Biennial AEI Forum, MEGA CITY 2070: The Future Vision of Urban Infrastructure: Addressing the Impacts of Growth, Development and Urbanization in the Building Industries. This theme provides a framework for the profession to understand, explore and challenge the IMPACTS of growth, development and urbanization.

While many have benefited from the tremendous growth and urbanization in many US cities, the impacts are significant in every aspect of our lives. This forum will allow representatives across the building industries to explore and discuss these impacts.

The Forum will feature presentations from industry experts that tie into the theme with topics on intelligent environment, structures/disaster mitigation, energy, education, ethics in structures and energy and a keynote presentation on ASCE's Future World Vision, Mega City 2070.

The National Building Museum is proud to be a presenting sponsor of the Grounding the Green New Deal Summit-- an initiative of the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) in association with the Weitzman School of Design McHarg Center, the Center for Resilient Cities and Landscapes, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture.

Addressing the climate crisis will require an unprecedented scale, scope, and pace of physical landscape transformation. There is an essential role for the built environment disciplines to play in reimagining this future and translating the goals of decarbonization, jobs, and justice into on-the-ground practices and built works. Through panel discussions with leading changemakers, this summit examines the intersection of policy, design, and advocacy to identify ways to accelerate individual and collective actions to effect change.

The summit builds from the Green New Deal Superstudio, a year-long open call that attracted the participation of more than 3,000 students and practitioners in the built environment disciplines. Some 670 design and planning projects were submitted to give form to the goals of the movement-led vision, and a select set will be on display during the event.

The summit is being presented as part of the National Building Museum’s Climate Action Weekend and its Climate ABC series’ programming. The Musuem is presenting a family and community event the following day on April 10 -  Planet Curious - A World of Climate Curiosity - that is open to the public, free of charge.
