National Institute of Building Sciences and buildingSMART International Sign Agreement to Support Open Standards

The goal is to mutually support the digital transformation of the U.S. and global construction industry

(WASHINGTON, DC, June 15, 2023) – The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) and buildingSMART International (bSI) have signed an agreement to ensure the requirements of the U.S. construction industry are captured and incorporated as part of the process to develop and implement open standards.

Highlights of the agreement include NIBS’ support of the adoption of IFC and other open data standards in the National BIM Standard-United States® (NBIM-US™), and NIBS will assist in promoting U.S. government, industry, and academia representation to support bSI and participate in projects to ensure that U.S. industry requirements are being voiced and addressed.

“The National Institute of Building Sciences and buildingSMART International align in the commitment toward digital transformation of the built environment,” said AC Powell, JD, CPS, President and CEO of NIBS. “This partnership is critical, as we work together to drive digital work practices across the country as well as support bSI in its development of international open standards and solutions for the design, construction, and operation of building and infrastructure assets globally.”

Clive Billiald, CEO of bSI, commented that the MoU signed between bSI and NIBS marks a “significant milestone in harmonizing our communities and advancing our activities in the United States.”

“NIBS will play a pivotal role in assisting us in meeting the demand for the development, acceptance, and utilization of standards such as IFC, along with related services,” Billiald said. “This work is vital to the improvement of productivity and sustainability across the built environment, and our collaboration with NIBS will help us realize these benefits across the value chain.”

NIBS also recently entered into a companion agreement with buildingSMART USA.
