Information Exchange Working Group Meeting

Come witness the newest, most cutting-edge building information modeling (BIM) information exchange standards being developed for inclusion in the National BIM Standard-United States™ (NBIMS-US) at this all-day Information Exchange (IE) Working Group Meeting. The National Institute of Building Sciences buildingSMART alliance™, in conjunction with the Facility Maintenance and Operations Committee, spearheads the IE Working Group. This meeting, which is free and open to the public, is where the latest progress will be presented and the course of information exchange development will be set for the year.

The morning presentation will begin with an update on the proposed national standard best-practice guide, Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) Guide, and a discussion of how COBie is being implemented in projects world-wide. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory will release a new report detailing the life-cycle business case for COBie. In addition, the IE Working Group will present a new series of proposed information exchange standards that extends COBie asset information by specifying the exchange of assemblies and connections for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC); electrical; water; and sensor system domains. National experts in these fields will present their findings and introduce each proposed standard.

In addition, manufacturers will present software supporting the development of each of these standards. In the afternoon, during the buildingSMART alliance Challenge, software manufacturers will test their software using the new standards. During the live testing phase of this challenge, all of the manufacturers will be given the same parameters to see how their particular software package processes and exchanges information.

Program Schedule – Full Day Presentations and Demos

8:30 - 11:45am
AM Sessions: Highlights of this session include the release of the national best-practice guide for using COBie as well as a calculator that predicts the impact of COBie for designers, builders and owners. While COBie contains the list of managed facility assets, a new set of proposed NBIMS-US information exchange standards for HVAC, electrical, water and control systems will also be introduced during this exciting session. The session will also cover an international architectural planning standard, the Building Programming information exchange and the Specifiers Properties information exchange.

  • buildingSMART Challenge Purpose and Overview- Dr. Bill East, Research Civil Engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center
  • COBie Calculator- Kristine K. Fallon, FAIA, Kristine Fallon Associates, Inc.
  • Specifiers Properties information exchange (SPie) Catalog- Mark Kalin, FAIA, FCSI, LEED, President, Kalin Associates Specifications
  • Building Programming information exchange (BPie) Introduction - Rolf Jerving, CEO and Co-Owner, Nosyko AS and CEO and Co-Owner, dRofus, Inc.
  • Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning information exchange (HVACie) Introduction - Dr. Bill East, Research Civil Engineer, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center
  • SPARKie – Electrical Systems Introduction - Tim Chipman, President, LLC
  • Water Systems information exchange (WSie) Introduction - Greg Williams, Kristine Fallon Associates, Inc.
  • Building Automation Modeling (BAMie) Introduction - Chris Bogen, US Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center
  • NFMT COBie Challenge for Computerized Maintenance Management Systems/Computer-Aided Facilities Management (CMMS/CAFM) Announcement - Angela Lewis, PE, PhD, LEED AP, Project Manager, Facility Engineering Associates (FEA)

1:15 - 5:15pm
PM Sessions: More than 20 commercial software systems have implemented NBIMS-US. During these sessions, manufacturers will demonstrate how their software packages, supporting design, construction and fabrication, have the ability to meet the Building Programming and HVAC information exchanges, as well as COBie. Software companies will describe their new export routines and product set-up guides. At the conclusion of the sessions, the IE Working Group will release the results of independent software testing to show the required time needed to bring the outputs of these out-of-the -box products into compliance with NBIMS-US.
