While reduced activity associated with the COVID-19 lockdowns is expected to cut carbon emissions by 4-7% this year, the decrease is insignificant in the long run. According to Oksana Tarasova, WMO Chief of Atmospheric and Environment Research Division, although it looked like the pandemic had brought the world to a standstill, carbon emissions continued almost unabated because lockdowns do not reduce overall energy consumption. Lockdowns only affect mobility.

Carbon is emitted whether it's the energy being used to heat your home work space or the carbon footprint left from sending an email that typically would have been an in-person conversation. Furthermore, with the fear of COVID-19 transmission, there has been an unprecedented decrease in mass transit ridership. This continued decrease will have a dramatic effect on carbon emissions as more people opt to buy cars and steer clear of rideshare options.

Our expert panel examines the hidden costs of remote work during a global lockdown. When COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill, it was thought that carbon emissions would be reduced. We are now finding that is not the case.

Building a brand for your company in the traditional way is normally something you do every day and have a marketing team to conduct the effort.

But building a personal brand is different – it’s promoting yourself and reminding people of your achievements and how you achieved your career success. That can be even more difficult as a female leader in the building industry, where you are focused on simply achieving success without too much disruption. In today’s environment it is important to utilize social media to highlight speaking opportunities, awards and other achievements to promote yourself, your company and motivate others.

We often take for granted the importance of building our brand and celebrating our achievements, but it is important. This session will allow C-suite leaders to share how they’re marketing themselves and utilizing social media to help build a brand. After the session we will share a few of these stories to encourage young women to join the industry and build their career by building their brand.

Who Should Attend: All female C-Suite executives in the building industry, from association executives to corporate leaders and women–owned and operated businesses.

Event format: This is an opportunity for conversation with other C-Suite female executives in a safe, thought-provoking environment.

Developed by the National Institute of Building Sciences Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) Provisions Update Committee (PUC) for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures (NEHRP Provisions) help translate new knowledge and recent research results for improving national standards and codes. The Provisions are a state-of-art resource and reference document for design professionals and standard and code-development organizations.

Join us on March 4, 2021 for the BSSC Council Meeting to celebrate the completion of the 2020 NEHRP Provisions (FEMA P-2082)-10th edition and recognize our distinguished industry leaders for advancing seismic safety. This will be an opportunity to learn about the Council’s activities and what we aspire for the future.

Following the BSSC Council meeting, the BSSC Symposium on 2020 NEHRP Provisions will present recommended changes to ASCE/SEI 7-16 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. These changes may significantly impact future seismic design of buildings. The symposium also will present a report on the PUC identified unresolved issues and recommended future topics and research needs.

Most of the recommended changes in the Provisions are expected to be accepted by ASCE/SEI 7-22. The standard will be adopted by reference in the 2024 International Building Code.

The 2021 ASHRAE Virtual Design and Construction Conference takes place March 8-10, 2021. The inaugural conference seeks to fill a need for ASHRAE members and practitioners using or planning to apply virtual design and construction in the design, construction and operation of HVAC systems.  The conference will provide an in depth look at the current  state-of-the-industry and near future outlook in such areas as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), machine learning, LiDAR Mapping, photogrammetry, and “digital twin” technologies as they are currently being applied to integrated design, building information modeling, project management, cost estimating, scheduling and sequencing, pre-fabrication, off-site construction, modular construction, robotics and automated installation, 3D printing, facility management, asset management and operations.

The proposed conference theme is “Reality – how advanced technologies are being used today; and, Potential – new applications for advanced technologies.” The program will include invited speakers and a call for presentations. The conference scope encompasses the design, construction and operation of HVAC systems in the Built Environment through the use of advanced technologies.  The content will emphasize case studies with specific “how-to, how we did it, what we plan to do next to improve,” current best practices.
