Building Innovation 2014 Conference & Expo Program: BETEC Symposium

Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council Symposium:
Design, Efficiency and Recycling for the Building Enclosure Life Cycle

Earn 6.5 Learning Units/Health, Safety, Welfare

Sponsored by TREMCOThursday, January 9, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

Gain insight into the latest technologies for improving performance of the building envelope at the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) Symposium: Design, Efficiency and Recycling for the Building Enclosure Life Cycle.

At the BETEC Symposium, experts in the building envelope design arena will present best practices in insulation, daylighting, waste management, energy and other building systems, and describe how a high-performance enclosure can impact a building’s overall performance. Speakers will explore a broad range of topics, including: continuous insulation; retrofitting condominiums; recycling and waste management; passive and active systems and their impact on the return on investment (ROI); thermal bridging; daylighting and reflectivity issues; glass energy and comfort; and benefits to the future building owner.

The morning session will begin with an overview of buildings, a history and a future vision of building envelope design. Later presentations explore the building life cycle, from design and construction through to the disposal of on-site materials.

For example, the session on design considerations will focus on how to accurately account for thermal bridging in design of building envelope assemblies and evaluate impacts on whole building energy performance using differing wall assemblies and select building configurations/types.

The presentation on the results of ASHRAE research will address the gap between predicted and actual performance, as well as future code iterations and sustainable design programs positioned to close/reduce this gap.

The speaker on disposal will highlight common methods used by recyclers to recover materials from construction debris, and how a builder’s actions can increase the recycling of materials from the waste stream, in addition to potentially reducing the overall cost of disposal.
