Korea to begin work on new BIM standard with help of buildingSMART alliance

Development of a Korean building information modeling (BIM) standard is at the heart of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) the buildingSMART alliance recently signed with buildingSMART Korea.

The two organizations exchanged the MOU during a trip to Paris for the buildingSMART International meeting in May. The MOU is intended to outline the sharing of various products between the two organizations. The buildingSMART alliance developed the United States National Building Information Modeling StandardTM for the United States of America. This original version, which outlines a basic procedure and approach, is based on international standards. Korea plans to use the document as the foundation for its nation’s BIM standard. Additional development by Korea would then be shared with the United States to improve the pre-existing standard. The two organizations hope that this joint effort will improve both documents, speed the process of standards development, and support a worldwide approach to building information modeling.

The MOU also addresses the sharing of articles that appear in the Korean buildingSMART magazine, The BIM, found on the buildingSmart Korea website, and the buildingSMART alliance’s periodical, The Journal of Building Information Modeling (JBIM), available at the buildingSmart alliance website. Both periodicals can be downloaded free and are available domestically by subscription.
