The National Institute of Building Sciences Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) will host, under the sponsorship of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a new 2017 webinar series focused on construction materials addressed in the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) publications.

The webinars will be based on three documents produced by the BSSC and published by FEMA in the 2015 NEHRP Provisions cycle, including FEMA P-1050, 2015 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures; FEMA P-1051, 2015 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions: Design Examples; and FEMA P-1052, 2015 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions: Training and Instructional Materials.

The series of one-hour webinars will address reinforced concrete; precast concrete; structural steel; composite steel and concrete; wood; and masonry.

The schedule is as follows:

  • January 27: Reinforced Concrete, presented by Peter Somers
  • March 17: Precast Concrete, presented by SK Ghosh
  • April 21: Structural Steel, presented by Rafael Sabelli
  • May 26: Composite Steel and Concrete, presented by Bob Pekelnicky

About the NEHRP Recommended Provisions

Under the sponsorship of FEMA, BSSC administers an ongoing consensus-based process of updating and maintaining the NEHRP Recommended Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures. The NEHRP Recommended Provisions and its Commentary, and resource papers embody the state-of-knowledge criteria for design and construction of new buildings subject to earthquake hazards. The new knowledge and technologies contained in this resource document are diffused into the model building codes developed by the International Code Council (ICC) and several national standards, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) ASCE/SEI-7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures.
