Smithsonian Program Executive to Keynote Building Innovation 2017

Hear about Collaborative Efforts on the Newest National Museum

McIntireAs the nation celebrates the opening of the recently completed National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) on the National Mall, the planning team of Building Innovation 2017: The National Institute of Building Sciences Fifth Annual Conference and Expo is proud to announce the event’s Opening Keynote Speaker, Judson J. McIntire, AIA, NCARB, LEED GA.

Smithsonian’s Program Executive for the newly opened NMAAHC, Mr. McIntire managed the scope, schedule and $540 million budget for the 400,000 sq. ft. museum, from planning and design through construction. He was instrumental in forging a construction manager at-risk delivery method for the NMAAHC project, an innovation for the Smithsonian.

Building Innovation 2017, to be held January 9-12, in Washington, D.C., will focus on Collaborating for a High-Performing Future. During Mr. McIntire’s presentation at the Opening Keynote Breakfast on Tuesday, January 10, he will share his experiences on the collaborative efforts involved with designing, constructing and opening this new national treasure. Mr. McIntire will highlight how the NMAAHC’s team of architects, contractors, consultants, federal agencies and Smithsonian representatives effectively worked together to deliver the most sustainable national museum ever constructed. He will share insights, best practices, lessons learned and challenges, as well as discuss the long-term planning, whole building design, life-cycle considerations and how the team met the complex engineering challenges of the project.

Since joining the Smithsonian Institution in 1993, Mr. McIntire has performed as design manager, facility master planner and project manager for revitalization projects in most Smithsonian museums and research institutes. Before the NMAAHC project, Mr. McIntire managed an award-winning $44 million, 360,000 sq. ft. lease consolidation project for collections storage and multi-use support, utilizing a unique lease-design-build delivery method. He also managed an award-winning Smithsonian campus-wide security and anti-terrorism project.

Prior to joining the Smithsonian, Mr. McIntire worked in private-sector architecture and engineering firms on a wide range of project types, including health care, research laboratories, university buildings, arts facilities and government projects encompassing new construction and historic structures.

In addition to Mr. McIntire’s opening keynote, Building Innovation 2017 will include 44 presenters organized into 16 sessions worth a total of 24.5 Learning Units (LUs) from the American Institute of Architects.

On Monday, participants will get a first-hand view of how the Institute works to improve the built environment and find ways to get involved in the process by attending leadership meetings. Other opportunities to hear from industry leaders include the Tuesday Exhibit Hall Walking Lunch where exhibitors will present the latest industry technologies; the Wednesday Plenary Luncheon; the Institute’s Annual Reception and Awards Banquet, where the Institute will recognize industry leaders with Institute awards; the Thursday FEDCon® Keynote Breakfast; and the Thursday Beyond Green™ Awards Luncheon, where the 2016 recipients will present their award-winning projects.
