Symposium Focuses on Evaluating Risk, Improving Building Performance

Attend the Integrated Resilient Design Symposium and learn how to evaluate buildings against the threat of multiple hazards, using methods that quantify risk, resilience and performance to help ensure planning and operations are safe, secure, durable, efficient and sustainable. With the theme Evaluating Risk, Improving Performance, the Integrated Resilient Design Symposium offers attendees a number of tools to assess potential risks to buildings from blast, chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) threats and natural hazards, while incorporating high-performance attributes into building design.
Scheduled for Wednesday, January 9 from 8:00 am – 11:45 am, at the Marriott Metro Center in Washington, D.C., the Integrated Resilient Design Symposium is just one of a series of events taking place during Building Innovation 2013—the National Institute of Building Sciences Annual Conference and Expo.
The National Institute of Building Sciences is working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) Infrastructure Protection and Disaster Management Division (IDD) on the development of cutting-edge resources that address the security and resiliency of buildings and infrastructure.
In 2010, the Institute hosted the Designing for a Resilient America Summit, sponsored by DHS S&T, which focused on the issue of resilience for buildings and related infrastructure. Attendees deliberated on possible strategies for federal departments and agencies to pursue to create a resilient America. Discussion addressed the resilience of U.S. buildings and infrastructure against both man-made attacks and natural hazard events, with four design-related approaches: high-performance buildings; codes and standards; continuity of operations; and integrated design. These approaches would support resilience in buildings by promoting good initial design and construction for new facilities, effective retrofit for existing facilities, and appropriate operational programs to help ensure that mitigation plans are in place and building systems operate as required.
Since then, DHS S&T has worked with the Institute and other members of its development team to create a suite of tools that helps building owners, managers and designers implement recommendations from the Summit.
At the Integrated Resilient Design Symposium, members of the development team will present the DHS S&T cutting-edge tools, including: the Integrated Rapid Visual Screening (IRVS) Tool, Urban Blast Tool (UBT) and Owners Performance Requirements (OPR) Tool; explain the latest progress and capabilities of the tools; identify how they are being used; and discuss the planned future directions the tools and programs that support them will take. Attendees can join a discussion of the relevant Summit goals and how these goals align with the future direction of the cutting-edge tools, which will provide valuable guidance to DHS S&T and its development team.
