Institute Calls for Industry Participation to Assist Haiti

In the wake of the devastating 7.0–magnitude earthquake that occurred in Haiti on January 13, we at the National Institute of Building Sciences ask the United States codes and standards community to help provide assistance and guidance in the reconstruction of the island nation.

The Institute would like your assistance in the development of a tool kit for use in rebuilding Haiti. The United States has a solid structure of codes and standards that benefit the built environment in our nation's communities. If Haiti were to put similar minimum standards in place for the reconstruction of its buildings and structures, the country would be better able to withstand future catastrophic events without such a high level of devastation.

The Institute's Building Seismic Safety Council, in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, develops the basis for the seismic standards contained in the American Society of Civil Engineers national load standard and the International Building Code. The Institute is working in conjunction with our contacts at the Infrastructure and Geophysical Division of the Department of Homeland Security on this effort.

If you are interested in participating in this beneficial program, please submit an email to nibs@nibs.org no later than Monday, February 1. The email must include your name, address, organization and contact information; as well as the type of available resources you can offer to address the impending reconstruction of Haiti.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA

President
