Gain insight on federal design and construction budgets, programs, events and market outlook across applicable federal agencies at the 2013 FEDCon®—The Annual Market Outlook Conference on Federal Construction. Presented by the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), FEDCon® will take place Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at the Marriott Metro Center in Washington, D.C., as part of Building Innovation 2013—the Institute’s Annual Conference and Expo.

Find out about the most authoritative, up-to-date information on federal agency building and infrastructure budgets, construction forecasts and regulatory updates. Now in its 20th year, the popular FEDCon® event gives private-sector architects, engineers, general and specialty contractors, and manufacturers insight into what they need to know to deliver services and products to the U.S. federal government—the world's largest facility owner and procurer of design and construction services.

"Recent reports have touted modest increases in employment and housing sales in markets around the country," said Institute President Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA. "FEDCon® offers construction professionals an opportunity to see how these positive trends in the general economy are impacting federal agency construction forecasts. Attendees will hear directly from agency personnel about construction budgets and future spending plans."

Officials from a number of federal agencies, including the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. General Services Administration, NASA, U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Transportation and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, have been invited to speak. Attendees will present their construction budgets for the current year and planned budgets for future years; discuss the types of buildings to be designed; offer regional and international construction information; and provide the overall direction of their design/construction programs.

Robert A. Ivy, FAIA, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer at The American Institute of Architects (AIA), will present the luncheon keynote address. Ivy will launch an AIA-NIBS collaborative effort—the Building Research Information Knowledgebase (BRIK) website—an interactive portal offering online access to peer-reviewed research projects and case studies in all facets of building, including a number from federal agencies and departments. BRIK will offer a user-friendly approach to help those involved in creating the built environment to find the building research, information and knowledge they need to design, own and operate high-performance buildings. He will also discuss the AIA’s sustained interest in building research and science, and some of the organization’s recent activities and projects, including the newly formed Building Research Council, another joint operation of the AIA and NIBS.

In addition to FEDCon®, Building Innovation 2013 will include the Institute’s buildingSMART alliance™ Conference, the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) Symposium, the Multihazard Mitigation Council (MMC) Symposium, the Low Vision Design Committee Symposium and the Integrated Resilient Design Symposium. This inaugural event, focused on Improving Resiliency through High Performance, will deliver informative programming from all of the Institute’s councils, committees and projects.
