Designing a Resilient America: Summit Report Now Available

The Report of Findings from Designing for a Resilient America: A Stakeholder Summit on High Performance Resilient Buildings and Related Infrastructure is now available for download.

Sponsored by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate, and organized by the National Institute of Building Sciences, the Summit, held November 30-December 1, 2010, in Washington, D.C., was part of an initiative that built on resilience programs at DHS and other federal agencies. It brought federal agencies, private industry, academia, state and local officials, and professional and trade organizations together to develop recommendations for buildings and related infrastructure.

Dialogue among the Summit participants developed into specific priorities for increasing resiliency in six areas, including recommendations for:

  • Executive and Legislative Action,
  • Federal Agency Leadership and Cooperation,
  • Public/Private Partnerships,
  • Codes and Standards,
  • Research and Development, and
  • Education and Outreach.

These recommendations need the attention of the highest levels of government—the President, Congress and ranking staff of the Department of Homeland Security and other federal agencies. Attendees helped to identify these important issues concerning the resilience of buildings and related infrastructure. The recommendations that came out of the Summit will be used to develop a road map for the Department and other federal agencies to pursue in creating a resilient America.
