Marshall Honored with AIA’s Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award

Mortimer M. Marshall, Jr., FAIA, former Institute board treasurer and charter member, has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards this honor to “those who exemplify the profession’s proactive social mandate.” AIA selected Marshall for the 2012 award in recognition of his continued dedication to the profession and his approach to architecture as a vehicle for leadership and service. “He worked with the GSA to include small businesses, women and minorities in their public buildings service program as early as the seventies. He promoted joint ventures as a way for smaller practices to gain needed experience,” wrote former AIA president Marshall Purnell, FAIA, in his letter recommending Marshall. This prestigious award is named for civil rights leader Whitney M. Young, Jr., a proponent of social change and head of the Urban League from 1961 until his death in 1971. Marshall founded The Marshall Group in 1982. His firm continues to provide architectural, structural engineering, construction management and general contracting services. Read the AIA release
