High Performance Based Design for Building Envelopes
July 20 Workshop Presentations and Post-Workshop Industry Review Process
The National Institute of Building Sciences is currently performing
groundbreaking work for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science
and Technology (S&T) Directorate Infrastructure Protection and Disaster
Management Division (IDD). The project, entitled High Performance Based Design
for the Building Envelope (HPBDE), establishes metrics, baseline and benchmark
performance levels, as well as outcomes for those performance levels, for the
critical attributes that define high-performing building envelopes. In
addition, the Institute is developing an online Owners Performance Requirements (OPR) Tool to
support decision-making by building owners to make the HPBDE data interactive.
The
purpose of the project, which is part of the DHS IDD Resilience Program, is to
provide building owners with a means to incorporate high-performance
goals for explosive blast and chemical, biological and radiological (CBR)
protection into their building programs, along with goals for safety, energy,
environment, durability and cost effectiveness as defined in the Energy Independence and
Security Act of 2007 (EISA).

Workshop
On July 20, 2011, the Institute’s High Performance Building
Council (HPBC) convened a workshop in
Washington, D.C., in order to get industry input and kick-off a review period
for the draft project report and OPR tool. Held
at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Headquarters, the workshop
brought together more than 50 public and private sector industry experts.(Agenda)
Workshop Presentations:
Industry Review
Members
of the HPBC and others interested in high-performance building envelope systems
are being called on to review the work and provide comments that will be
incorporated into the final version of the HPBDE Project Report and OPR Tool,
both of which will be made available to the public at the conclusion of the
project.
The
Preliminary Report and a link to the Test Version of the OPR Tool will be
posted here in the near future. An announcement about their availability will
be made to all Workshop respondents and other interested reviewers.
