The Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) Board of Direction has approved the membership of the 2014 Provisions Update Committee (PUC). The PUC is the hands-on group responsible for developing the next edition of the NEHRP (National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program) Recommended Seismic Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures. Its major tasks include:

Updating and maintaining the Provisions,

Reviewing topic areas for change proposals and determining which should be developed under the BSSC update and which should be forwarded to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) for consideration,

Reviewing and adopting Standard ASCE/SEI 7-10 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures and other updated standards with any needed exceptions or other modifications,

Identifying issues for development by specialized teams,

Providing technical guidance for the issue teams to develop update proposals,

Proposing revisions to the 2009 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions documents for acceptance by the Board of Direction for balloting by the BSSC member organizations, and
-
Resolving ballot comments.
David Bonneville, PE, SE, Senior Principal of Degenkolb Engineers of San Francisco, Calif., will chair the 24-member committee. Members cover a wide area of expertise, including: design analysis, geotechnical, nonstructural, nonbuilding structures, concrete, steel, wood and masonry. Liaisons representing the ASCE/SEI 7 Seismic Subcommittee, the BSSC’s Code Resource Support Committee (CRSC), the U.S. Geological Survey, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also serve on the committee.
