Institute Board Tours NAHB Research Center

Tom Kenney (right), vice president of
engineering and research at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center, gives members of the National Institute of Building Sciences Board of Directors a tour of the Research Center’s testing facility. The Board, which held its September meeting at the Upper Marlboro, Md. site, was able to
visit both the market research and testing areas of the Center.
Marsha Mazz Receives Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award

Upon receiving the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award, Marsha Mazz (center) addresses the audience at the U.S. Celebration of World Standard Day Dinner.
The
U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee has recognized Marsha K. Mazz of the United States Access Board as the 2010 recipient of the prestigious Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. Named for the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce, the award recognizes demonstrated leadership in promoting the important role standardization
plays in eliminating global barriers to trade. Mazz was nominated for her outstanding contributions to the use of standardization to improve access for persons with disabilities.
Mazz received the honor in front of more than 250 members of the U.S. standardization community during the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day on September 23, at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC. The Institute serves on the event’s planning committee.

Meet the Coordinating Council
The National Institute of Building Sciences membership is at the heart of this organization’s success. Involved in the Institute’s numerous councils, committees and projects, our members participate in the detailed processes of task forces and working groups.
The Coordinating Council works to harmonize efforts among the various Institute programs to enhance synergies across programs. In this issue, we focus on the buildingSMART alliance representatives on the Coordinating Council. Tom Gay serves as the Alliance chair. David Morris serves as the Alliance vice chair. Read more about
Gay and
Morris.

Morelli Takes a History
Ugo Morelli, a retired project officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s New Buildings and Existing Buildings Programs, sorts through old photos and archived newsletters during a visit to the National Institute of Building Sciences in September. The Earthquake Engineering Research Institute asked Morelli to prepare his oral history and provide related photos.

BETEC Ballots due October 15

There’s Still Time to Sign up for the
“Why Green Buildings Cannot Be Built Without Air Barrier Systems” Workshop
This one-day workshop, sponsored by the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council, the High Performance Building Council of the Institute, and the Air Barrier Association of America, will be held October 26 at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC. Leading experts on air barrier technology and building envelope design will cover the significance of air control and barrier technology as well as the latest technical developments in materials and performance measurement. Five AIA Continuing Education System credits (Health-Safety-Welfare and Sustainable Design) will be awarded. Registration is $50 for students, $150 for Federal employees and educators, and $200 for everyone else.
Register now.
GSA Integrated Workplace Acoustics Workshop
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will hold an Integrated Workplace Acoustics Workshop October 27-28 at the Institute’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. GSA’s goals for the two-day working session include identifying the key design aspects and behaviors of an acoustically successful workspace and developing a framework of actionable guidelines for the design, delivery and use of an acoustically successful workspace. Institute Director Richard Paradis, PE, a Board Certified Noise Control Engineer, is coordinating the by-invitation-only workshop.
Revised VA PG 18-15 Soon to Be Available in Print, Electronic Formats
The National Institute of Building Sciences, working with a multidisciplinary team of consultants, has completed major revisions to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
A/E Submission Requirements for Major New Facilities, Additions, & Renovations PG 18-15, Vol. B. The revised document reflects changes in the VA’s procurement and design practices and now includes requirements for
building information modeling, third party green programs, Integrated Design Process, commissioning, as well as for the new project phases of Pre-Negotiation and Pre-Design. In addition to the traditional printed book format, the submission requirements are available in an electronic matrix that allows the user to search, access and print requirements according to topic or project phase. Both the electronic and downloadable print formats of PG 18-15 will be available on VA’s Technical Information Library website in early October.
High-Performance Buildings: Why We Need Them and How to Get Them
Looking to learn about high-performance buildings? The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Architecture Engineering Institute (AEI) will host a webinar on high-performance buildings presented by the Institute’s own Richard Paradis, PE. The webinar will examine the issues and initiatives that lead to the need for high-performance buildings; the obstacles to be overcome to achieve high-performance buildings; tools and resources that help get to high-performance; and examples of successes.
Register to attend.
ASCE’s Sustainable Engineering Certification
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is establishing a program for professional certification in sustainable engineering. The certification will provide owners, public officials and the general public assurance of the competence of professionals planning, designing, constructing and operating infrastructure projects for sustainability. ASCE invited Institute Director Richard Paradis, PE, to be one of the participants in the planning workshop to help develop the curriculum for the courses leading to certification.

NCEF Webinar Available Online For a Limited Time
The webinar National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities hosted earlier this month,
"Community Use of Schools: Recovering Costs to Extend Benefits," is now available online. The webinar presented findings from a
SchoolDude.com national survey of community use of schools. It also introduced a free tool developed by the 21st Century School Fund and the Center for Cities and Schools to: identify the components of school district facility costs; calculate the cost of owning and operating the facilities; and formulate cost recovery options. The full webinar will be available for view until December 22.

2010 Green BIM Smart Market Report Now Available
McGraw-Hill Construction has released this year’s 2010 Green BIM Smart Market Report, entitled
Green BIM: How Building Information Modeling is Contributing to Green Design and Construction. The buildingSMART alliance was a sponsor of this effort and Executive Director Deke Smith feels the report directly helps the cause of furthering interoperability. He explains, “The report does an excellent job of linking BIM to LEED, sustainability, prefabrication, energy, environment, and green operations and maintenance.”

The Hot Topics Are BIM, GIS and FM
Building information modeling, geospatial information systems and facility management seem to be the hot topics more and more these days. The
Journal of Building Information Modeling fall edition, which comes out next month, will be dedicated to this important intertwining of information tools. In addition, the IFMA Foundation recently published
Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) for Facility Management, which outlines the interaction of BIM, GIS and facility management.

Department of Education Hosts Sustainability Summit
Marking a new milestone, the U.S. Department of Education convened a Sustainability Education Summit earlier this month. This is the Department’s first step to develop a national action agenda for refining education to enable the transition to a green and sustainable economy. In addition to Education representatives, high-level representatives from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Energy provided insight into the importance of sustainability as an overarching need for the economic competitiveness of the nation. Summit participants focused on opportunities through curriculum development, construction of high-performance facilities, and public/private sector cooperation. Input from Summit participants will be incorporated into the development of an action agenda by the Department of Education.
Judy Marks, Director of the Institute’s National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities served on the planning committee for the event. During his speech at the Summit, Education Secretary Arne Duncan recognized the Clearinghouse, stating, “We fund the National Clearinghouse…which is a national leader in helping K-12 leaders make school facilities green and sustainable.”
