  National Institute of Building Sciences - President/CEO Search

Position Profile
PRESIDENT/CEO

Summary – The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) is conducting a search for a President/Chief Executive Officer.  Founded in 1976 in Washington, DC, NIBS is authorized by the Congress to be an authoritative source on the regulatory-, technological-, and information-related problems and needs of the nation’s building process.  The President reports to the Board of Directors, supervises a staff of 25, and is responsible for a budget exceeding $10 million. Applications should be received by January 15, 2008. 

Principal Responsibilities:

Leadership – The President ensures the excellence of NIBS’ technical programs, publications and services, and assures NIBS’ leadership role in the building community.  The president must possess the vision necessary to ensure a progressive approach to contemporary needs and challenges, as well as to develop new initiatives to improve the building process and fulfill the Institute’s mission.

Development/Outreach – The President is responsible for the development and growth of NIBS’ existing institutional programs, its relationships with public and private organizations, and its current and potential array of clients.  The ability to understand and identify closely with NIBS' programs and projects, and the ability and to explain and communicate them clearly, convincingly, and professionally, is essential.

Management – The President is responsible for management, budgeting, strategic planning, long-term goal setting and the identification and acquisition of the resources required to carry out the Institute’s programs.  The President holds management and coordination responsibility for the NIBS staff and its other resources.

Board of Directors – Develops and strengthens positive working relations with members of the Institute’s Board of Directors and its councils and committees to ensure the open and effective working environment essential to promoting the Institute’s mission.

Representation - Represents NIBS in its relations with constituents, customers, members, affiliated associations, the media and the public.

Requirements: The successful candidate shall have recognition and stature in the building community, knowledge of the technical and procedural aspects of the U.S. building process, and possess successful experience in leading a business or non-profit organization of comparable size. Also required are knowledge of the federal governmental process related to NIBS’ mission and a strong understanding of activities at the congressional, administration and agency levels.  A high level of personal energy and integrity are essential, as are excellent communications skills and extensive representational experience.
